Devils Creek hits the mark! Visited the distillery June 16, 2021. I enjoy whiskey but am always a bit leery of rookie labels that charge too much and often miss the mark. NOT the case at Devils Creek. First off John and Luan were genuinely welcoming and fun to talk with. John poured a tasting of the rum, bourbon and rye. I'm a rum novice so I honestly can't give you much detail. It was quite tasty though and my wife purchased a bottle of it.
The bourbon gave a nice Kentucky hug and further sips gave me all the flavors my pallet enjoys in a fine whiskey. The Rye .oh my!! We all looked at each other after the first two sips. "I'll take two bottles please". Very well done sir.
Get your selves to this distillery when you're in the area. It's in a small commercial park off the beaten path .a good thing I'd say. Look forward to visiting Devils Creek every time we're in Mammoth!!!

STEPH JUDGEMENT: A wonderful little family-owned distillery that's more passion project than business.

Their billboard near Mojave on my latest trip to Mammoth caught my eye. A new distillery in Mammoth? With bourbon? The hubby and I are bourbon fans so I knew I had to check it out. Their tasting room hours are VERY limited, but I lucked out and happened to catch it on a Saturday afternoon with a friend after hitting the mountain. The owner, John, was manning the small tasting room counter (4 seats) and his son Clayton, the distiller, was hard at work in the distilling room. Clayton's adorable big black lab Bailey acted as greeter. They have three product as the moment: a bourbon, rye and a rum. The tasting is $7, which is waived if you buy a bottle. I started with the bourbon, then moved on to rye--both good--but it was the rum that really surprised me. I don't normally drink rum and kind of dismiss it, but this had a really delicious and distinctive flavor that made me sit up and take notice. John was a wonderful guide, explaining everything about their history, products, and how the distilling process worked in general (which I had no idea about). My friend and I whiled away an enjoyable hour or so tasting, learning a lot, and getting a tour (we happened to be the only ones there at the time). I ended up buying all three bottle so the hubby and I could enjoy at home. This is a truly artisanal operation that I highly recommend.

Awesome LOCAL distillery in Mammoth Started from scratch in Mammoth Lakes, not just buying and mixing spirits like some other "distilleries" you may come across in other areas. John and family have put together some tasty rum, bourbon, and whiskey made right on site. Stopped in for a tasting and walked out with a bottle of rum for the cold nights after skiing. John is very knowledgeable and can fill you in on all the intricacies of making spirits at 8000 ft!

A must try Distillery experience. The Mendel family showed us a wonderful experience in their barrel tasting room. John, Luan, and Clayton have a passion for their spirits. They shared Rye, Bourbon, and a surprise blend that was delicious and smooth.
A must visit on any trip to the Mammoth area.

High Spirits in the High Sierra We highly recommend a visit to Devils Creek Distillery for a great and informative experience in a very welcoming environment. We were met by John Mendel, one of the owners. While we were tasting the rum, bourbon and rye whiskey and being entertained by John, we got a chance to meet Clayton his son, and John's wife Luan. After the tasting we got a personal tour of both the small distillery and the barrel room. The barrel room convinces you that they take no shortcuts and have a lot of pride in producing correctly-aged spirits. The distillery is definitely a unique business dedicated to perfecting their own artisan spirits. Of course, a bottle of their great rye whiskey made its way to the car. A wonderful way to complete a visit to Mammoth Lakes. We'll be back for another bottle or two!

A must-do Mammoth experience Devils Creek Distillery was a great stop on our Mammoth vacation. A family owned distillery right in Mammoth, you can get a personalized experience in how the Mendel family perfects their Rum, Bourbon and Rye. I highly recommend the tasting. The education about the distillery process was an added bonus. The staff was very accommodating to my request to visit outside of tasting hours. Stop by Devils Creek Distillery. You won’t regret it.

The tasting room was cozy and we felt very welcomed. The owner of the distillery gave us a tasting and a tour. He explained how they make the whiskey so well. Will come back for sure just to buy more whiskey.

The Mendel family gave a us a wonderful experience in the their barrel tasting room. John, Luan, and Clayton all have a passion for what they make there. The different Ryes, Bourbons and a surprise extra blend were all "Devilishly" delicious and smooth.
A must stop on any trip to the Mammoth area.

Highly recommend a pitstop to Devil's Creek Distillery in Mammoth. Went here on the advice of a friend and had an incredible time. This small, 'off the tourist path' tasting room is family run by John Mendel, his wife Luan and their son (can't remember his name now). Tremendously hospitable and insanely knowledgable too. As we sampled the very tasty Devils Creek bourbon and rum samples, and looked in on the distillation process in the adjoining room, we learned about the history of the Mammoth area and got a comprehensive education in whiskey/bourbon/rum making. We even wrote them afterwards and said we wanted a few more bottles to take back as gifts, and John came to our cabin...on Christmas Eve no less...and delivered them to us. Highly recommend.
